Thursday 29- I did my stretches, dang windy outside!
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 45 and 59 degrees, NW winds 22-36 with gusts up to 50 MPH 0r more, humidity around 27 percent, mostly clear skies.
According to the National Weather Service: “Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 66. North northwest wind between 16 and 18 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 47. North northwest wind between 11 and 16 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.”
I started off the day by updating the Copper Mountain Mesa Website but I didn’t upload it yet because it’s only Thursday; I’ll do that tomorrow.
The wind blew all day long so I stayed inside. I really wanted to start working on the patio but not in this wind. So I messed around with my computers. I ran Puppy Linux on my Asus Netbook and it actually found my USRobotics USB modem! Puppy Linux is on a live CD and I tried to install it on the hard drive but the GRUB boot loader couldn’t find it or probably I’m doing something wrong. This is an older version of Puppy so I’m downloading a new release which will take forever on dialup.
Too dang windy to go for my evening walk so I stayed inside and listened to Astro 10: General Astronomy: The Geometry of the Universe, and Einstein’s Biggest Blunder?
I read aloud from the textbooks: “Astronomy Today” more about Saturn’s moon Titan; “The Cell: a Molecular Approach” RNA Polymerase and Transcription.
I started a new book “Sheba” (1995) by Jack Higgins. It takes place in Nazi Germany in March 1939 as Hitler begins his plans to invade Poland on September1. He wants to send the Brits a message by blowing up the Suez Canal and assigns it to an Admiral to come up with an idea on how to accomplish this before the invasion begins. The Admiral and his aid come up with a plan to have a German base at a hidden archeological site call Shea in the Arabian Desert and use a sea plane to carry mines and high explosives to the Suez. They use Spanish SS officers to purchase a Catalina and start a business in Dahrein to carry out their sinister plan. Meanwhile there’s an American archeologist who uses his boat to smuggle in the Gulf of Aden. He is met by this lovely lady who wants to hire him to find her lost her lost husband.
I did my stretches, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Sunday 02

Sunday 02- I did my stretches.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 80 and 108 degrees, a slight breeze, humidity around 24 percent, clear skies.
According to the National Weather Service: “Monday: Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 104. West wind between 5 and 8 mph becoming calm. Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 75. West southwest wind between 6 and 11 mph.”
I finally finished the “Network Concepts” book, yea! Now I can get to studying something else that interests me. Let me see; I have “The Cell: a Molecular Approach” and the “Linksys Wrt54g” book on wireless routers waiting to be read. I still have a few chapters in “Entanglement” to read, so maybe I’ll begin both when I get done with it.
I went for my evening walk and finished the lecture by Professor Bloom on hydrogen fusion in stars- the Proton-Proton Process and Hydrostatic Equilibrium. When I got back I laid down for just a minute and fell asleep to awake at 9pm! I started reading “Entanglement” but Kevin called and we yakked for a spell. I continue, and probably finish, the book tomorrow.
Joel came by with my mail and a nice thank you card from the fourteen year old girl whom I fixed her computer for free. She made the card herself and it was quaint, telling me how happy she was and grateful for having it fixed. I think I’ll pin it to my wall! It made me feel mighty good! Joel also brought me a whole apple pie that made me feel mighty good, too!
I decided to take out the 8Gig drive on one of my Dell Mini 9s and replace it with a 4Gig and install Ubuntu Linux on it. Ah, such fun! I did the updates for it once I had it installed. Then I installed Kstars onto it. Now I have my astronomy program that I like using! I had it installed on the Asus EEE 701 but it didn’t run right for some reason.
I did my stretches, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Monday 22

Monday 22- Stoney was at the hospital this morning having minor surgery to remove a growth from his head. I was standing by ready to come and get him if he needed a ride back home, but he called after he got home and said everything went alright and he was able to drive back himself. I then did my stretches and ran two miles.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 67 and 93 degrees, calm winds, humidity around 19 percent, clear skies.
According to the National Weather Service: “Tuesday: Sunny and hot, with a high near 98. Light wind becoming south between 10 and 13 mph. Winds could gust as high as 18 mph. Tuesday Night: Clear, with a low around 71. West southwest wind between 8 and 10 mph.”
It seems that it’s getting a little warmer these last few days, been in the 90s. Seimi stopped by to ask me a few astronomy questions about last night’s showing of “Impact” on ABC! I had to laugh and showed him what I posted to my journal and to the Astronomy Forum I belong to; so far I’ve received 18 comments to what I posted there.
Again I messed around with computers today trying to figure out which one I want to load up Win 2000 Pro on so I can begin setting up a network in my house. I think doing is the best way to learn. Somehow the MBR (master boot record) got corrupted on my old IBM laptop and I spent a while on that successfully booting up Win 98 but lost Puppy Linux. I need to find a switch for the network to complete the equipment I need.
I went for my evening walk listening to Astronomy Cast – Questions Show: NorthEast Astronomy Forum (NEAF) where amateur astronomers asked some very good questions and Pamela Gay gave excellent answers.
Then I went over to Stoney’s for dinner. He tried baking squash with potatoes, onions, and garlic rapped in aluminum, it was a little over cooked but was mighty good.
On my way back home I stopped off at John’s to see his new internet satellite system that he says is mighty fast. Then I went across the street where Roger is building a rental and yakked with him till it got dark.
I finished the last two chapters of “A Brief History of Time”. Things I have to remember from the book are: the Anthropic Principle (we see the universe as it is because if it was different we wouldn’t be here to see it), Pauli’s Exclusion Principle (no two identical particles can have the same position and velocity), and Feynman’s Sum over Histories Method (which I’m still trying to figure out). Then I did my stretches, lifted weights, and went for an nightly run, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.
